Little Maltese uses an all natural approaches to flea preventative whenever possible. Insecticide based flea products are just that, insecticides. Or, what we like to call, poison. Have you ever wondered how a box of these flea preventatives can state "unsafe for humans", or "wear gloves", or "call a poison control immediately" and still be safe for your pet? Unless we have a bad flea season concern, we use Diatomaceous Earth for most of our flea and parasite control. And guess what!? We have NEVER had  a flea problem. We also occasionally use a combination of all natural black walnut and pumpkin to worm. And spray our dogs with all natural pest repellant from The Honest Company.

Diatomaceous Earth Info:

Diatomaceous Earth is white clay-like powder that is composed of the fossilized remains of marine plankton, which once were the main source of food in prehistoric times. As the plankton died, their fossilized remains fell to the bottom of the sea floor and eventually hardened and became the clay like powder, referred to as diatomite. The fresh water deposits of diatomite eventually were transported onto land where they are now mined. This form of diatomite is called food grade diatomaceous earth because it is the purest form of DE and can be consumed by humans and animals.

WARNING: DO NOT confuse Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth with the Non-Food Grade which is used in swimming pools.

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth has many uses: in the household, with pets, on plants, around livestock, and for stored grain.

Getting rid of fleas, ticks, lice, and other pests that bother our your pets with food grade D.E. can be done several different ways. Take the food grade D.E. and rub a handful into their coats. For natural tick and flea control, simply sprinkle it on their bedding, in the yard, or add it to the carpets. Use the hand held Pest Pistol Duster for easy pet dusting. You can also mix it with water and use a sprayer for your yard, which is what we do often.

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is also used internally to remove parasites and worms from your pets without the use of chemicals.
Feed large dogs: 1 teaspoon daily
Cats, puppies, and small breed dogs: 1/2 teaspoon daily

It has been suggested that infected pets should be fed DE for 90 straight days, and then continue feeding every 3rd day. Or feed continually. Food grade diatomaceous earth is also a great way to cleanse the body from the various toxins  encountered each day. Plus, DE is incredibly safe and provides the body with many nutrients we do not receive enough of on a daily basis. It is full of essential minerals. This is why taking a DE supplement can dramatically improve the health of a pet. It can improve the coat,  making it soft and shiney, it can improve energy levels, immunity, and more. Over all, It can improve the quality of life.

In humans, there are many benefits to taking food grade DE. Food grade Diatomaceous Earth contains a large concentration of silica, a much need element, as well as many other trace elements vital to our health. Some of the most common benefits of Diatomaceous earth include: stronger bones, teeth, and nails, improved skin health, improved joint health, lower blood pressure, and lower cholesterol, among many other things.

Food grade DE is one of the best ways to flush the body’s digestive system and remove toxins and other parasites from the digestive tract. DE can cleanse the digestive system due to its’ shape. Under a microscope, DE looks similar to tiny shards of glass. These sharp edges of DE scrape away toxins, viruses, and bacteria from walls the digestive tract. These harmful materials are then trapped by DE and removed during bowel movements. This allows your digestive system to be cleansed and function much more efficiently. There are also no side effects of taking food grade DE. While DE is not specifically approved for human use, there have been no reports of any health problems in humans taking DE. Plus, DE can simply be added to any food or drink you consume throughout the day. If you do mix it with water or a drink, you’ll need to stir the mix to ensure the DE does not settle and start to thicken.  DE users can take it by the tablespoons, or in capsulated. Sometimes it is taken up to a quarter cup a day.  Another beneficial aspect to DE is that it any extra DE you take will naturally be removed. Therefore, you do not have to worry about overdosing on DE in anyway.

Diatomaceous earth has also been found to help lower cholesterol, remove toxic heavy metals from the body, cleanse the digestive system, and even treat Candida yeast infection. While this seems like a miraculous discovery, it is merely simple science that has been discovered. The diatomaceous earth particles have an electrical charge that attracts toxins, heavy metals, bacteria, fungus, and other harmful organisms in the body so that they can be absorbed and expelled through urine and feces.

Use  Diatomaceous Earth as a natural insecticide for the control of aphids, whiteflies, beetles, loppers, mites, leafhoppers, and other insects. Sprinkle it inside your greenhouse, or outdoors on fruits, vegetable plants, flowers, grains, and grass. It's safe for humans and pets, which makes this an excellent insecticide for our food. No more worrying about been poisoned with what goes into our mouths.

Diatomaceous Earth controls insects by using physical, not chemical, action: It punctures an insect’s exoskeleton and absorbs its body fluids—thus posing no harm to warm-blooded life. Moreover, on any surface, this natural pesticide has a remarkable repellency factor. As long as DE is present, insects tend to stay away, making a serious infestation unlikely. The more it is used, the more an environment is created which makes insects feel unwelcome.
For young plants, as little as 2 lbs. of diatomaceous earth per acre may be adequate. For larger plants, 5 lbs. per acre is probably sufficient. It applies best when there is dew or after a light rain. It is a long-lasting, natural, effective powder, impossible for insects to build up a resistance against.

Even food manufacturers have recognized the benefits of adding diatomaceous earth to their foods in order to help safeguard their products from bug infestations. This means that most people have consumed diatomaceous earth in products such as flour, powdered mixes, and grains without even knowing it. Without a doubt, food-grade freshwater diatomaceous earth is safe to use and it provides a wealth of health benefits among its many other uses.

There are so many uses for food grade D.E. which almost makes it a staple for any household. It's also affordable. You can usually get it packaged just for pets, but the most economical way is to purchase a 50 lb bag from amazon for about $25 + shipping.
